A Colorado man faces multiple criminal charges in connection with a fire that killed 12 horses and several other animals earlier this month.

The horses, a goat, and several chickens and roosters were residing in the stable in Commerce City, Colo., when the fire broke out on May 9. Tests conducted by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation later revealed that the blaze was deliberately set.

Commerce City Police arrested Narciso Amaya-Bustillos on May 22 in connection with the incident. He was later charged with one count of first-degree arson, two counts of criminal mischief, and 13 counts of aggravated cruelty to animals, said Krista Flannigan, spokesperson for Adams County District Attorney Don Quick.

Amaya-Bustillos is slated to appear in court on May 26
