Ponies used to pull vendor carts might be back to work soon under an agreement between their owners and City of Baltimore authorities. The ponies are all owned by so-called Arabbers, Baltimore street vendors who sell produce from horse-drawn carts.
In November, animal welfare authorities removed 19 animals from Arabber-operated stables. Since then, the ponies have resided at the Days End Farm Horse Rescue.
On Wednesday, city officials agreed to return ponies when their owners demonstrate they can provide appropriate housing for the animals.
"The health department wants to go in and inspect the stables, then follow up to monitor the animals’ care," said Tania Baker, spokesman for the Baltimore Housing Department
