Calgary Trailer Accident Investigation Closed

The investigation into the October stock trailer accident in Calgary, in which a trailer carrying 44 horses overturned, has been closed.

According to a spokesman with the Calgary Police Service, horse owner and driver Gordon Trach has been charged with careless driving, failing to produce insurance, driving with no license plate on the trailer, failing to notify registry of change of address, and operating a vehicle with the wrong class of license.

Twelve horses died as a result of the accident. Horse Welfare Alliance of Canada Chair Bill desBarres said the surviving horses are in stable condition.

"Our understanding is that the horses are showing no negative signs resultant from their traumatic incident and are enjoying pasture with supplemental feed and water," desBarres said.
