Standing 18 hands tall, the 6-year-old Thoroughbred/Percheron cross, Cody, escorted a group of bicyclists displaying, among other things, their right to protest in the front of the White House.

The cyclists were part of the third annual World Naked Bike Ride. According to their Web site, the bikers are a grass-roots movement geared towards protesting “oil dependency” and celebrating “the individuality of our bodies.”

Sergeant Robert Lachance, public information officer for the U.S. Park Police, explained, “We deal with demonstrations on a daily basis. Demonstrators can number from only one up to thousands, whether it’s seminaked bikers or anti-war demonstrators.”

Cody seemed to take the event in stride and displayed such charisma that many tourists turned their cameras on Cody, ignoring the demonstrators.

Equines are donated to the service from various sources and they are screened for the proper disposition for the unique tasks before more extensive training. Cody and Jones have worked together two years.

“We care about our horses and their welfare, both mentally and physically,” noted Lachance. “The National Mall and Memorial Park is America’s front yard. It’s our duty to protect the public and the First Amendment.”
