Seventy-five horses seized from a Sharpsburg farm in Maryland are gradually finding homes from the Humane Society of Washington County, according to an article at www.baltimoresun.com https://www.baltimoresun.com/features/bal-to.horses28may28,0,3217035 by Rob Hiaasen.

In December 2006, the horses were seized from Barbara Reinken’s property. Reinken, a 62-year-old registered nurse, was placed on fixe years of supervised probation (for animal cruelty and abuse,” according to the report. Part of her plea agreement was to give up ownership of the horses. Five of the horses died or were euthanized because of their conditions.

Hiaasen said the humane society has spent more than $100,000 to care for the horses and had to lease a farm. Because many of the mares were pregnant, there have been several births since the horses were rescued. Days End Farm in Howard County has helped out by taking 22 of the horses to rehabilitate.
