An equine herpesvirus outbreak on the East Coast will make it tougher for racehorses from New Jersey and New York to enter the state of California.
Starting today, horses will have to get prior approval from the California Horse Racing Board before coming here. Officials hope the new policy will keep this particular strain of herpes out of the state.
The herpes virus was discovered at Monmouth Park in New Jersey and a stable at Belmont in New York.
Because local horses often compete with horses shipped in from other states, racing officials are being cautious.
Only horses exposed to the herpes strain are at risk.
