Shetland Euthanatized After Being Dragged Behind Truck

A 3-year-old pony's fight to stay alive has been lost. A veterinarian at the Baldwin Animal Clinic in Summerdale, Ala., said the animal's injuries were too great to overcome and the tiny horse was euthanatized this morning (Sept. 28).

Jet, a shetland pony, sustained massive skin and muscle trauma when it was dragged along 500 feet of asphalt on Alabama 59 in Loxley. Police believe the man accused of dragging the pony behind his truck Saturday night is 46-year-old Jerry Cruthers.

Additional charges are pending against Cruthers. He was originally charged with animal cruelty and reckless endangerment and now faces a felony charge of killing or disabling livestock. He remains in the Daphne City Jail.
