People in the New York area have a new place to look for Thoroughbreds that can be retrained as hunter/jumper, dressage and pleasure horses. The Exceller Fund now hosts free listings for trainers and owners of racehorses at and near the Finger Lakes Race Track. The listings can be accessed directly at https://exforg.proboards32.com/index.cgi or via The Exceller Fund’s website in the What’s New section at https://www.excellerfund.org/.

These listings are patterned after the type of services CANTER provides. For various logistical reasons, CANTER is unable to start a chapter in the New York area in the near future, so with their consent, The Exceller Fund has stepped in to help to fill this need.

The Exceller Fund listings allow trainers and owners, who are not in an immediate need to move a horse out, to find a private buyer for a horse, usually at a greater price than the common auctions in the area. These listings are a perfect complement to the Finger Lakes Race Track Adoption Program, which seeks to find new homes for horses in more immediate need of being moved out. Both programs aim to re-home horses whose days as a racehorse are over due to age, injury, or inability to be competitive, yet still provide a safe future for the horse.

Many of the horses listed are old time campaigners with 50, 80 and even 100 starts under their belt. One such example is Stage Run (by Claramount o/o Stage Style by Gold Stage), an 8 year-old bay gelding with 109 starts under his belt and earnings of $124,716. Some of these horses have won trifectas or Pick 6 tickets with big payoffs. They compete in races that support the horse industry. They have proven their heart and their loyalty, and deserve a chance after their racing careers are over to continue in a new career
