Gary Wilson, DVM, a Winchester, Ky., veterinarian, has been named chief veterinarian for the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority (KHRA). Wilson, who has been a practicing veterinarian since 1977, has extensive experience in the field of equine medicine and surgery.

“Dr. Wilson is a great addition to the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority,” said Jim Gallagher, KHRA executive director. “We look forward to the leadership role he will provide to this phase of the responsibilities of the Authority. His appointment is consistent with Gov. Ernie Fletcher’s direction of selecting leaders of integrity, experience, and sound judgment to direct Kentucky’s signature industry.”

As chief veterinarian for the KHRA, Wilson will be responsible for directing the state program to protect the safety of horses entered in races as well as supervising drug testing of horses. Wilson replaces Mitzi Fisher, DVM, who retired July 13 after more than 20 years of service.

“I look forward to the challenges this position holds,” said Wilson. “My goal is to establish a regulatory veterinary program that will operate with efficiency, proficiency, respect, and integrity, not only as it relates to Kentucky racing, but for the entire industry
