Churchill EHV-1 Update

Equine herpesvirus type-1 (EHV-1) has been confirmed as affecting horses at Churchill Downs. 

Three barns (6, 38, and 39) are currently quarantined on the backside of Churchill Downs.

Equine herpesvirus type-1 (EHV-1) has been confirmed as affecting horses at Churchill Downs. 


Three barns (6, 38, and 39) are currently quarantined on the backside of Churchill Downs.


To date, a total of five animals have shown neurologic evidence of disease. One horse in each of two barns was euthanized after the animal’s condition progressed to a recumbent state. EHV-1 was confirmed in each of these animals. The third barn has had three animals present showing a milder neurologic disorder. 


Horses in these three barns have been quarantined and segregated from the general equine population since Tuesday, May 17
