Organophosphate-Free Feed-Through Fly Control

On Nov. 24, Triad Specialty Products announced pending approval of a new feed-through fly control product. Serene Feed-Through Fly Control, which was designed for reducing fly populations in and around equine facilities, is in the final stages of the regulatory process, and should be available to horse owners before the end of the year.

According to the company, the product targets immature house flies and biting stable flies; these stages represent a critical gap in fly control programs.

Formulated as a pelleted top dressing given with each horse's feed, the product passes directly through the horse and is deposited in the manure where flies lay eggs and breed. In scientific studies, Serene Feed-Through Fly Control inhibited at least 95 percent of immature flies from developing into adults.

Veterinarians maintain that the new product be used together with products that control migrating adult flies. "Adult flies can travel many miles, so it is important to continue measures to control them," says Dr. Kathy Palma, vice-president of research and development at Triad. "But our research shows that Serene Feed-Through Fly Control significantly reduces the need for pesticide sprays, thus saving owners time and money."

The company reported that the product is non-toxic to horses, other mammals, and beneficial insects, and is free of organophosphates. The active ingredient has been used as a feed-through fly control in the poultry industry for more than 20 years.

Expected to be available by year-end, Serene Feed-Through Fly Control will be offered to horse owners only through equine practitioners. Additionally, Triad will offer veterinarians the option to have orders shipped directly to their clients.
