The Kentucky State Veterinarian’s office late on Monday, Aug. 19, confirmed that four more horses in Kentucky have been confirmed as having West Nile virus (WNV). None of the horses had been vaccinated.
This brings the total of WNV cases in Kentucky this year to 19. Of those 19 cases, nine survived, eight were euthanized, and two died.

The four new cases were a 20-year-old female which died in Carlisle County; a 14-year-old Standardbred mare and a 9-year-old Standardbred gelding which are recovering in Todd County; and a 2-year-old Tennessee Walking Horse colt which was euthanized in Washington County.

With the awareness of the presence of WNV in the state, the state veterinarian’s office is receiving an abundance of reports of horses demonstrating a variety of neurologic symptoms, noted Rusty Ford of the Kentucky State Veterinarian’s office. Each of those reports is checked out. There are currently 31 cases pending test results
