While preparations have been made to stay abreast of anything that might indicate a repeat of last year’s mare reproductive loss syndrome, veterinarians are optimistic that this season will be nothing out of the ordinary. Personnel from the University of Kentucky will monitor fields and weather patterns, the Kentucky Livestock Disease Diagnostic Center is watching for any unusual increases in necropsies, and veterinarians are monitoring the front line and sharing information with their colleagues. 

In a way, last year’s crisis brought the Central Kentucky veterinary community closer, as the practitioners are now scheduling regular informal gatherings to exchange information and ideas on the health of horses in the area. These gatherings are promoted by the Kentucky Association of Equine Practitioners. There also will be regular information from the Kentucky Livestock Disease Diagnositc Center and the Gluck Equine Research Center available to veterinarians, and the vets will direct any observations or concerns to those in charge of research.
