Blackburn TRF Opens in Kentucky

Kentucky dedicated the nation’s third major Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF) facility for the rehabilitation and retirement of former racehorses. The facility officially opened on Nov. 19, 1999, with a ceremony at the Blackburn Correctional Complex near Lexington, Ky. The facility will provide a home for 65-70 former racehorses whose fate otherwise might be uncertain. Inmates at the minimum security prison will provide care for the horses as part of the TRF’s highly regarded vocational training program. The prisoners renovated the old dairy barn that houses the facility (left). On hand to cut the ribbon at the facility was owner of champion Secretariat, Penny Chenery (right). Four horses already are in residence at Blackburn TRF.
