New Options For Distance Learning

Remaining current and informed is crucial to success in the horse industry, but busy schedules do not always provide time out for education. To address this need, the Equine Research Centre in Guelph, Ontario, has developed the Distance Learning series: five home-study courses that cover essential topics in equine care and management.

The Distance Learning program was developed in partnership with the University of Kentucky and consists of instructional videos, supplemented with additional materials provided by the Equine Research Centre. The Centre also offers access to its extensive library and resource center for ease in obtaining horse health and industry information.

The five Distance Learning courses offered by the ERC are:

1) REPRODUCTION
Topics covered include pregnancy management, parturition, management of the newborn foal, the estrous cycle, semen collection, insemination and much more.

2) NUTRITION
Feeding recommendations for horses with specific needs from lactating mares to elite athletes, plus digestive anatomy and understanding how nutrition affects growth.

3) EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY
An examination of the equine muscular system and responses to exercise, the biomechanics of movement, assessing the horse's physical fitness, and use of technology in modern training.

4) EQUINE MANAGEMENT
Common equine diseases, the newest treatments for internal parasites, equine health record management as well as a look at the economic impact of the horse industry.

5) FACILITIES AND DESIGN
Recommendations for stable layout and construction based on the latest research findings, facilities for specific operations (yearlings, broodmare and stallion complexes), as well as, fencing and paddocks.

Each course is $169 which includes video tapes, course notes and an ERC publication related to the topics covered. The ERC is also offering supplemental reading packages to go with each course. Those who would like to earn a Certificate of Achievement may opt to complete and return assignments and write an open-book exam for evaluation. The price for each course with the exam option included is $199. Taxes, shipping and handling are extra.
