The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service is seeking nominations for membership in the Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Foreign Animal and Poultry Diseases.

Members of the advisory committee serve for two years advising the Secretary of Agriculture on actions and policies necessary to keep foreign diseases of livestock and poultry, such as foot-and-mouth disease and exotic Newcastle disease, from being introduced into the United States. Members also give recommendations on contingency planning and on maintaining a state of preparedness to deal with these exotic and emerging diseases, if introduced.

Terms will expire for the current members of the committee in June 1998. APHIS, a part of USDA’s marketing and regulatory programs mission area, is seeking nominations from interested organizations and individuals to replace these members. An organization may nominate individuals from within or outside its membership. The Secretary will select members to obtain the broadest possible representation on the committee.

To submit nominations or for more information, contact Joseph Annelli, chief staff veterinarian, Emergency Programs, Veterinary Services, APHIS, USDA, 4700 River Road, Unit 41, Riverdale, Md. 20737-1231, 301/743-8073
