Gary and Mary West’s millionaire grade II winner Dollar Bill, who proved popular enough to warrant his own web site, was euthanized Aug. 3 after foundering. He suffered from ankle problems during his racing career and had been a patient at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital near Lexington since last October. The Wests sent him to Houstondale Farm near Paris, Ky., to be put down and buried in his entirety. Dollar Bill, who was retired from racing last year, was to have begun his stallion career this year at William Schettine’s Signature Stallions near Reddick, Fla.

Dollar Bill (Peaks and Valleys–Saratoga Dame, by Saratoga Six) was a two-time stakes winner and ran in all three 2001 Triple Crown races. After a troubled trip in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I), he ran fourth in the Preakness (gr. I) and Belmont (gr. I) Stakes, then was third in the Travers Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga.

Dollar Bill, whose stakes wins came in the Brown & Williamson Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (gr. II) and the Risen Star Stakes, placed in a total of nine stakes, all of which were grade I or grade II. He won four of 22 starts and earned $1,225,546. Twenty-one of those starts came for trainer Dallas Stewart and the other for Bobby Frankel.

The Wests bought Dollar Bill through Ben Glass for $145,000 at the 1999 Keeneland September yearling sale from Robert E. Courtney, agent. Courtney and his wife bred Dollar Bill
