WSU Establishes Hotline For Grieving Pet Owners

In January, Washington State University's College of Veterinary Medicine began operating a Pet Loss Support Hotline to support grieving animal owners. Specially trained WSU veterinary student volunteers are staffing the hotline, which is being funded by grants. The hotline is designed to help pet owners work through difficult decisions in treating chronic diseases, as well as support them after their pet's death. The training students receive prior to operating the hotline includes how to approach a range of situations, such as how to discuss the loss of a pet with children. Callers can access the hotline by calling 509/335-5704 from 6:30-9:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Saturdays.
