By default, installing the Internet Explorer 7 browser enables a technology called ClearType that is supposed to improve the appearance of text. Unfortunately, it does not work on all monitors, especially non-flat-screen ones. Here is a good tutorial for disabling ClearType if you are having this problem: http://www.itexpressions.com/cleartype.shtml.
