The Quest to Conquer Laminitis  *
"Owners and trainers worldwide have the feeling that every veterinarian and every farrier have years of experience and vast knowledge about laminitis and podiatry (foot care). Unfortunately, this is not the case," said Ric Redden, DVM, founder of the International Equine Podiatry Center in Versailles, Ky., and host of the Bluegrass Laminitis Symposium, ... Read full story

Bluegrass Laminitis Symposium: Fighting White Line Disease  *
White line disease sneaks up on you without warning--one day your horse is fine, and the next day the farrier is digging a crater in your horse's foot, dumping what seems like handfuls of soft, crumbly hoof horn on the floor. You might ask, what the heck is white line disease? Why is it such a big deal? Your horse isn't even lame, although you fear ... Read full story

Farrier Hygiene
Q: Many veterinarians and farriers have told me that white line disease is becoming more common. Is it ridiculous of me to purchase my own blacksmithing tools for the farrier to use exclusively on my horse? This practice is common in nail salons for protection against the spread of fungal and bacterial infections (as well as HIV). It seems logical ... Read full story

Good Foot Gone Bad  *
It seems like only yesterday your horse soared over that four-foot oxer, slid to that perfect stop in a reining pattern, or ambled smoothly down that shady trail. Now, watching him limp three-legged down the barn aisle, you wonder, "How could this have happened so fast? How could I have not seen this coming?" Most hoof problems don't magically occur ... White Line Disease Diagnosis and Treatment  *
The white line of the foot can be seen by looking at the sole of your horse's hoof. The area (that looks whitish) between the outside hoof wall and where it meets the sole is the white line. When this becomes damaged, it allows fungus and/or bacteria to invade and separate the layers of the hoof wall. When that happens, the infection can spread around ... Read full story

Letter To The Editor  *
There has not been enough room to publish some of the longer letters to the Editor in the print issue of The Horse, therefore we will be placing some of them online in the news section. This letter makes reference to an article which can be viewed at http://www.thehorse.com/ViewArticle.aspx?ID=248 White Line Disease Concerns I enjoyed Dr. Ball's ... Read full story

Hormone Responses to Feeds Joe Pagan, PhD, owner of Kentucky Equine Research in Versailles, Ky., discussed glycemic response in growing horses as an indicator of developmental orthopedic disease. He said looking at diet and skeletal disease was nothing new--a study done at The Ohio State University (presented at the 1985 AAEP convention) changed ... Read full story

White Line Disease in the Hoof  *
Look up “white line disease” in your equine veterinary book, and you might not find it. This name for the condition was first coined in 1990, and the disorder is also known as seedy toe, hoof or stall rot, hollow foot, yeast infection, Candida, wall thrush, and (incorrectly) onychomycosis. But when white line disease came to be recognized as a unique ... Read full story

White Line Disease/Canker: AAEP Convention Table Topic  *
White line disease (hoof wall separation) and canker (chronic overgrowth of the horn-producing tissues of the foot) are hoof concerns often linked to poor hygiene. Many veterinarians and farriers think that white line disease is much more common than it used to be, and they have focused mainly on this condition. “You don’t see it very often in hard-working ... Problem Feet  *
It takes nearly a year for the hoof to grow down from the coronary band to the ground. Therefore, anything that happens to the horse -- whether specific trauma to the foot or a systemic problem -- can affect the health of the hoof for a long time. Add into that equation that many horses genetically have feet that are not equipped to handle the day-to-day ... Read full story

Hoof Wall Wonders  *
The topic for this month's "Step by Step" is white line disease. Nothing would please me more than to write a helpful, informative article on white line disease for horse owners, but at this point, that article would have to be very, very short. We know very little about white line disease. Many people have ideas about what it is and how to treat it, ... Read full story
