Case Reports

Cure For a Toothache November/2005
Abby is a Tennessee Walking Horse mare who was recently purchased by a Virginia family as a 5-year-old and shipped there from Tennessee to train and show. A dental examination six months after purchase found that her right and left lower first cheek teeth, 306 and 406 on the Triadan numbering system (a system used consistently to number teeth across different animal species), were cut off at the gum line sometime the previous year.
Clover Photosensitivity October/2005
A rainy, cool summer in Manitoba, Canada, was turning to fall when Thunder, a 2-year-old Paint/Arab cross gelding with lots of white across his body, began to show signs of colic. He was treated for colic four times in two days.
West Nile Recovery x 3 September/2005
One day, Marla Gilvin heard whinnying uncharacteristic from her 5-year-old Kentucky Mountain mare Cocoa Rain. “I went out to see what she was doing and called her to the barn,” Gilvin recalls. “She didn’t move.
Severed Extensor Tendon July/2005
One afternoon in December, my gelding George lurched into the barn with a hole where his knee used to be. The emergency veterinarian, Dr. Zimmerman, soon confirmed our worst fears: George's extensor tendon was severed, his tendon sheath damaged, and his joint capsule punctured. Our best guess, since his left side was covered in mud, was that he'd fallen while running and slid into a fence post.
Returning From the Brink June/2005
It was feeding time and Miss Donna, a drafty, old-style Haflinger, galloped across the pasture toward the barn. That might not seem like an impressive activity for most horses, but just two years ago, she was almost slated for euthanasia. Founder.
Making the Best of It May/2005
Not all dreams work out the way we hope or plan, but Moon Doggie went from a dream of glory to a fulfilling companion. He is now a 3-year-old appendix Quarter Horse that is a friend to a once lonely performance horse. Moon can run and play with the best of them, even though he does so with an odd gait.
Degenerative Suspensory Ligament Desmitis April/2005
South Beach Baby, a.k.a. Hope, was a 16-month-old Thoroughbred filly who gave the gift of knowledge to many in the horse industry. Her painful battle with degenerative suspensory ligament desmitis (DSLD) came early in life and progressed rapidly. The suspensory ligaments extend from the back of the carpus (knee) or hock to the sesamoid bones and down to the pastern.
Wound Healing Documented March/2005
In October 2002, I was called out to a ranch to examine wounds on a mare that had been run through a barbed wire fence by stray dogs sometime the day before. The rancher was concerned that she might not recover past being pasture sound.
Hoof Abscess Goes South February/2005
My 12-year-old Thoroughbred gelding, Sterling Story, suffered four months with what my vet and I thought was a hoof abscess. He was retired from the track as a 6-year-old, and I have ridden him in dressage and as a trail horse since. He is that one-in-a-million people-loving horse that has bonded with me as my true friend.
Bute, Colitis, and Ulcers January/2005
On a blazing Idaho day, the 4-year-old Arab gelding Khalil showed signs of colic. Owner Patty Katucki made an emergency call to the nearby Idaho Equine Veterinary Hospital in Nampa. Upon the veterinarian's arrival, he gave Khalil Banamine and tubed him.
