The investigation into a series of horse killings in Florida widened on June 19 when a rancher discovered two slaughtered horses partially buried in a dirt mound on his Miami-Dade County property.

The British Horse Industry Confederation (BHIC) has reported that it opposes a £10.50 levy on horse owners proposed by the U.K.'s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
BHIC Chair Professor Tim Morris (Equine Science and Welfare Director at the British Horseracing Authority), Mark Weston (British Horse Society Director of Access, Safety and Welfare), and Jan Rogers (British Equestrian Federation--BEF--Head of Equine Development) worked together to produce a response from the horse industry.

The second Kentucky International Equine Summit (KIES), sponsored by the Equine Industry Program at the University of Louisville in cooperation with the University of Kentucky’s Equine Initiative, will be held April 26 and 27, 2010, in Lexington, Kentucky.
The inaugural Summit held in April of 2008 featured more than 90 speakers and panelists from around the world discussing industry economics, horse welfare, and genetics and breeding.

Last summer, the chance to test that theory came up for Bell when second-year veterinary student Dane Tatarniuk began working on a project to define the bony anatomy of the horse's sinus.

| Boston Police Horses Relocated After Budget Cuts |

The horses of the Boston Police Department Mounted Unit disappeared from Boston's streets as of June 30, the end of the fiscal year. The 12 horses fell victim to budgetary cutbacks needed to bridge a $20 million shortfall and avoid layoffs of uniformed officers.
Of the unit's 12 horses, four will be maintained by the Plymouth County Sheriff's Department (PCSD), three have been returned to prior owners, and five will be leased to the New York City Mounted Unit.

Russell Willeford, the Oregon man convicted of shooting and abandoning a 6-year-old Arabian gelding in the Deschutes National Forest, will serve 90 days in the Deschutes County Jail and pay more than $9,000 in restitution in connection with the incident. He will also serve five years probation, and is barred from possessing firearms or domestic animals during that time.

The Jockey Club has enhanced its free Tattoo Identification Services by adding access its markings database to the tattoo research module.
The free tattoo identification service was unveiled in April to help owners identify tattooed but unknown Thoroughbreds in their possession. For legible tattoos, owners could use a free tattoo lookup feature available from The Jockey Club's website, and for illegible tattoos or partial tattoos, customer service representatives from the Registry were made available to provide free research of a Thoroughbred's identity using the information contained in The Jockey Club's database, including color, markings, and photographs.
