University of Illinois to Host Horseman’s Clinic

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champagne College of Veterinary Medicine will host a horseman’s clinic on Feb. 1.

"The purpose of the horseman’s clinic is to increase education and awareness of all horse owners on basic and in-depth topics pertaining to a horse’s health maintenance and prevention of disease," the program description reads. "The speakers will also address how to handle common horse emergencies and behavioral problems."

Lecture topics and speakers are scheduled in include:

  • Exercise Intolerance—Jonathan H. Foreman, DVM, MS, Dipl. ACVIM
  • Basic Wound Care—Matthew C. Stewart, MVet, PhD
  • Emergencies and What to do While You’re Waiting for the Vet—Karie Ann Vander Werf, DVM
  • Maintaining Healthy Hooves —Dennis D. French, DVM, Dipl. ABVP (Equine)
  • How to Keep a Horse Happy and Healthy—Scott M. Austin, DVM, MS, Dipl. ACVIM (Large Animal)
  • General Equine Ophthalmology—Ralph E. Hamor, DVM, MS, Dipl. ACVO

Speakers will also give demonstrations on bandaging techniques, lameness examinations, the emergency/rescue trailer, and basic veterinary skills for kids (up to age 16), and hospital tours will be available. Exhibitors will also be in attendance
