Harry Werner, VMD, of North Granby, Conn., has been selected as the next vice president of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP). He was inducted into office yesterday (Dec. 5) at the AAEP 52nd Annual Convention in San Antonio, Texas.

A Philadelphia native, Werner entered veterinary school at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 1970 with an interest in general practice. However, exposure to horses at the New Bolton Center and the tutelage of Drs. Charles Raker, Bill Moyer, Bob Kenney, and many other gifted teachers quickly shifted his interest to equine practice. Throughout Werner’s veterinary school years, extra-curricular positions, including work for Dr. Jordan Woodcock at Delaware Park and numerous horse shows, reinforced his equine interest.

Following four years as an associate in a Connecticut mixed practice, Dr. Werner began his present equine practice in 1979. Located in the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains, the practice now sees a caseload of 85% English sport horses plus a variety of other disciplines and breeds. The primarily ambulatory practice has a clinic that handles emergency care, internal medicine cases and minor surgery. Werner’s special interests include lameness, purchase examinations, wellness care and owner education. With the help of dedicated staff, the support of local colleagues, and ongoing continuing education and technological advances, the practice continues to meet the challenges of offering high quality patient care and client service in a smaller, general equine practice environment.

A committed 28-year AAEP member, Werner has chaired or served on numerous committees and task forces. He was a member of the board of directors from 1995 to 1999 and served as the AAEP treasurer from 1999 to 2002. He also is a past president of the Connecticut Veterinary Medical Association.

Werner’s clinic is located on a small farm where he and his wife Susan live near their son, daughter, son-in-law, and new granddaughter. Werner’s favorite non-veterinary pastimes include boating and fly fishing off Cape Cod and spending time with family and friends
