A Nevada man is facing charges after allegedly dragging his horse behind his truck.

Elko County, Nevada, Undersheriff Clair Morris said sheriff’s department personnel responded to a call on May 30 about a horse being dragged for more than 300 feet down a gravel road behind a truck. Deputies identified the horse’s owner and found the animal in an enclosure, Morris said. Further examination revealed that the horse had sustained a fractured neck, abrasions, and other injuries, she said, and the animal was transported to a veterinarian’s office for treatment.

The horse’s owner Humberto Cortez was subsequently arrested and charged with animal cruelty, overdriving, and torturing or injuring an animal. He remains in police custody, Morris said.

“The horse is still at the veterinarian’s office,” Morris said, adding that the animal is expected to recover
