A herd of horses is receiving rehabilitative care after being removed from a New Jersey farm operated by a Standardbred racehorse trainer.

Matt Stanton, spokesman for the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NJSPCA) said seven Standardbred horses were seized Dec. 2 as evidence from a farm operated by Monica Thors in Swedesboro. At the time of their seizure, all the seized horses were allegedly overweight and lame, he said.

After the seizure, two of the horses were euthanized due to their condition, Stanton said. The remaining five horses are under rehabilitative care at an undisclosed location, Stanton said.

Thors was subsequently charged with two counts of criminal cruelty
