Salt Lake City Bans Horse-Drawn Carriages

Salt Lake City's council has banned commercial use of horse-drawn carriages on city streets.

The commercial horse-drawn carriage trade has been debated in Salt Lake City's council since February 2013 when council members voted to regulate that industry by establishing rules dictating horses' ages and requiring the random drug testing of carriage drivers. The ordinance also required that carriage companies educate the public about the carriage trade and how carriage horses are cared for.

In August 2013, that ordinance came under new scrutiny after a carriage horse collapsed in Salt Lake City and later died.

On Nov. 25, Salt Lake City Council members voted unanimously ban the carriages, a city council representative said. While the ordinance outright bans the commercial horse-drawn carriage trade, it does allow exemptions for special occasions, such as parades or other events that require a special permit, the representative said
