Champion Thoroughbred racehorse Speightstown had colic surgery April 1, and WinStar Farm, where the stallion stands, reported April 2 he’s "recovering well" after successful surgery.

Speightstown has covered more than 60% of his book to date, WinStar said in a release. According to surgeons at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute, near Lexington, Ky., the stallion could be back in the breeding shed in three or four weeks if there are no complications.

"We will do everything within our power to accommodate all those breeders who have supported our program," WinStar president Doug Cauthen said in a statement.

Speightstown, by Gone West, is the 2004 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (gr. I) winner and champion sprinter that year. He stands for $35,000 live foal stand-and-nurse at WinStar in Central Kentucky. Speightstown also won three grade II stakes in his career
