Australia’s Herald Sun reported today that a Thoroughbred racehorse drowned after bolting, crashing through a racetrack railing, and plunging into a nearby river. The jockey bailed off the horse as it smashed through the rail.

“Jockey Paul King fractured ribs in the incident early today at Perth’s Belmont racecourse,” reported the Herald Sun. King was cantering the unraced 4-year-old mare that is normally quiet, when she spooked and bolted to the outside rail. He thought the mare would stop upon seeing the fence, but she plowed straight through the barrier near the 1500 m mark of the track.

King told the paper, “It has gone down the embankment into the water and it swam for a little bit before it drowned.”

Racing officials say an necropsy is being conducted on the mare
