The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) will review the science and use of medroxyprogesterone acetate (Depo-Provera) in competition horses during a public workshop on March 13 in Orlando, Florida.

The federation said member participation is essential in helping the USEF determine if it is necessary to change the rules regarding the use of this substance at USEF-licensed competitions. The USEF will provide members, stakeholders, and industry experts two ways to participate:

  • Through the moderated workshop: An expert panel will hear presentations from the public and membership, as well as industry experts, prior to making a report to the Board of Directors at its mid-year meeting. This will be a presentation format rather than a Q&A so panelists can focus on listening to the membership and the science; and
  • Through written comments: Comments can be submitted by e-mailing 2017workshop@usef.org. Comments should be received by the USEF no later than one week following the public workshop.

Medroxyprogesterone Acetate Fast Facts:

  • Depo-Provera was created and developed for pregnancy prevention in women.
  • USEF has heard from its members that they administer Depo-Provera as a substitute for Regumate.
  • Scientific research demonstrates that Depo-Provera does not produce the same effect in horses as it does in humans.
  • Anecdotal evidence suggests that Depo-Provera has a calming effect on horses.
