The New Mexico Livestock Board (NMLB) has lifted the quarantine at Sunland Park Racetrack related to an equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) outbreak. Outside racehorses can now enter the racetrack, and the more than 1,600 horses housed on site since the outbreak began can now leave.

Officials first established the quarantine on January 22 after a horse tested positive for the neuropathogenic strain of EHV-1. In total, 68 horses at the racetrack (approximately 4% of horses at the premises) tested positive for the disease. An additional five horses at the nearby Frontera Training Center also tested positive.

“I think the biggest takeaway from this ordeal will be the need for biosecurity—not just in times of crisis, but all the time,” said Bill Bunce, NMLB executive director.

The New Mexico Racing Commission (NMRC) has adopted changes coming out of the outbreak, a statement read. Now, a horse entering an NMRC-licensed racetrack or training center in must be accompanied by copies of its registration certificate and a current health certificate from a veterinarian attesting to the horse’s health and temperature
