Montana authorities are investigating the fatal shooting of a Quarter Horse near Butte.

Undersheriff George Skuletich, of the Butte-Silver Bow County Sheriff's Office, said a horse grazing about 30 yards from his barn sustained a single fatal gunshot wound behind its front shoulder on Nov. 29 or 30.

“We do not know if it was a mistake by a hunter or not,” Skuletich said.

As the investigation continues, anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Butte-Silver Bow Sheriff's Department at 406/497-1125
