A backlog at its primary laboratory has led the Indiana Horse Racing Commission (IRHC) to contract with a second lab on an emergency basis.

The IHRC this year began using LGC Science in Lexington, Kentucky, to handle equine drug testing for Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing at Indiana Grand Race Course and Standardbred racing at Hoosier Park Racing & Casino. Because of a backlog there, Industrial Laboratories in Colorado was hired to assist.

Industrial Laboratories will test Indiana samples beginning in late August for a minimum of five weeks, the IHRC said in a release. The Lexington lab will focus on Indiana's backlog of confirmatory testing while LGC will continue to perform out-of-competition testing.

The IHRC said it will evaluate the status of its testing program during the next 30 days in order to apportion its testing needs for the remainder of the 2014 race meets.

Industrial Laboratories is accredited by the International Organization for Standardization and the Racing Medication and Testing Consortium. The IHRC said all tests on paired samples at the lab will meet or exceed current Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association guidelines.

LGC recently told The Blood-Horse issues with equipment and staffing led to a similar testing backlog of samples from the Delaware State Racing Commission.
