Curlin, North America’s richest horse with earnings of more than $10.5 million, began his new career Feb. 13 when he covered his first mare at Will S. Farish’s Lane’s End Farm near Versailles, Ky.

According to a release from Lane’s End, the first mare bred to the two-time Horse of the Year was Maggy Hawk, a mare owned by Jess Jackson, the majority owner of Curlin. Lane’s End stallion manager Bill Sellers said the new stallion covered the mare “in a very professional manner,” according to the release.

“We are pleased to see Curlin move into his new career by breeding such an outstanding mare as Maggy Hawk,” Will Farish said.

Among the two stakes winners produced from Maggy Hawk is champion Afleet Alex, winner of the Preakness (gr. I) and Belmont Stakes (gr. I). She is also the dam of $384,000 stakes winner and grade II-placed Unforgettable Max, and Jolie Hawk, who produced $317,000 stakes winner Cash’s Girl.

Curlin is a son of Lane’s End’s two-time leading sire Smart Strike
