In 2005, Keeneland has given more than $1 million for charitable giving, research and community support officials announced today (Dec. 13) at its annual holiday luncheon. More than 90 charitable organizations were recipients this year. Through the years, Keeneland has given more than $13.8 million to various organizations.

Recipient organizations provide vital services to the central Kentucky community and to the Thoroughbred industry. Keeneland’s charitable grants program is supported primarily by profits generated by Keeneland’s Thoroughbred sales, racing, and simulcast operations.

“Our annual contributions are derived from profits, as opposed to endowment, each year so we can really celebrate when we’ve had a great year at Keeneland because it allows us to give back more to the community,” said a Keeneland-issued press release. “We are delighted to see our annual charitable giving and community support top a million dollars for the first time ever.”

The primary categories of funding for Keeneland’s contributions program are health and human services, research, higher education, arts and culture, animal welfare and historic preservation
