Horses trained by Steve Asmussen will remain under quarantine in Barn 38 for at least a few more days. Seven horses in his barn still test positive for equine herpesvirus, although there are no new cases with clinical signs. The neurologic form of herpesvirus caused the deaths of two horses at Churchill this spring.

Assistant Scott Blasi, who oversees Asmussen’s stable at Churchill Downs, said the positive horses will be separated from the rest of the stable and moved to the detention barn at Churchill Downs that had been used for pre-race “milkshake” testing. That pre-race testing has been suspended until the quarantine is lifted by the Kentucky Department of Agriculture. That office is expected to conduct more blood tests on the Asmussen horses early in the week of June 6.

Asmussen horses stabled at Churchill Downs still cannot compete in races at the track and their training remains limited to special hours scheduled apart from the general population.

The quarantine has been lifted in Barn 39, which houses horses trained by Paul McGee and Bill Cesare. Blood tests have been performed on horses trained by Ronny Werner in Barn 6 and results on those tests are expected over the next two days
