The Animal Health Foundation recently announced that it has made a $50,000 research grant to Christopher C. Pollitt, BVSc, PhD, associate professor in equine medicine and director of The Australian Equine Laminitis Research Unit at the School of Veterinary Science at the University of Queensland, for ongoing research into the pathological mechanism of laminitis. Pollitt and his dedicated team have earned an unprecedented ninth award from the Animal Health Foundation since 1995.

The AHF also made a $10,000 grant award to Philip Johnson, BVSC, MRCVS, MS, Dipl. ACVIM, of the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine for continued research into the cause of obesity-related laminitis. Johnson has discovered an enzyme present in the fat cells of obsess horses that is responsible for symptoms similar to Cushing’s Syndrome developing in these horses. Johnson is a leading researcher on diseases of the equine hoof, and has received substantial funding from the AHF since 2000.

Established in 1984, the AHF is a non-profit research-funding organization dedicated to finding a cure for laminitis. To date, it has awarded over $430,000 to individuals and organizations whose scientific research focuses on finding a cure for laminitis. Another $150,000 has been pledged toward AHF’s efforts.
