The British Equine Veterinary Association’s (BEVA) philanthropic arm, the BEVA trust is launching a series of vet volunteer pilot projects over the coming year, following a review of its activities and an assessment of BEVA members’ views. The projects will help determine whether BEVA members’ willingness to donate their own time can be successfully channeled into ventures to improve equine health and welfare.

The BEVA Trust was established almost 50 years ago and historically the bulk of its expenditure has been small grants relating to travel and education. However, with continual veterinary advancements and changes in BEVA members’ needs and aspirations the trust commissioned an independent review of its core purpose and strategic aims, to ensure its role remains wholly relevant.

Experts from charitable, veterinary, equine and commercial sectors undertook the review. They considered the evolution of the trust and gathered the views of BEVA members, to assess what charitable activities were needed and achievable in the 21st Century. Members agreed strongly that BEVA should have a philanthropic arm and a significant majority indicated that they would be willing to donate their time in support of the Trust.

In response the trust now plans to harness the significant intellectual capital and professional expertise within the BEVA membership and put it to a charitable purpose through pilot partnerships with existing nongovernmental organizations. An initial series of projects will involve collaboration with United Kingdom and international organizations, including the British Horse Society (BHS), to put equine veterinary volunteers on the ground to provide education and clinical skills
