Trailer Crash in Knoxville Kills 10 Horses

A veterinarian treated several surviving horses for superficial wounds.

Ten horses have died after a pair of trucks hauling semitrailers collided in Knoxville, Tennessee, on Oct. 23.

A written report from the Knoxville Police Department (KPD) said two trucks were traveling east in the right lane along Interstate 40 when a flatbed semi that had stopped on the road’s shoulder began to merge back onto the roadway. The driver of the first semitrailer made a rapid lane change to avoid the merging truck; the driver of the second semitrailer—the one hauling about 30 horses—was unable to avoid colliding with the merging vehicle, the KPD report said. Eight of the horses died on impact.

Sandra Harbison, media relations specialist for the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine, said Meggan Graves, DVM; a fourth-year veterinary student, and a veterinary technician responded to the accident along with personnel from KPD Animal Control Unit and the Knox County Sheriff’s Office. Graves euthanized two horses at the scene due to their injuries, Harbison said.

Because it was too dangerous to transfer the surviving horses to another trailer on the interstate, the inoperable truck and trailer was transported to the Mascot Stockyard, where Graves treated several other horses for superficial wounds, the KPD report said. The remaining horses were unhurt, the report said
