A Colorado man was sentenced on Jan. 12 to serve more than 10 years in prison in connection with a barn fire that killed 12 horses and several other animals on May 9, 2010.

The horses, a goat, and several chickens and roosters were residing in a corral on private property in Commerce City, Colo., when the fire broke out. A subsequent investigation revealed that the blaze had been set deliberately.

Commerce City Police later arrested Narciso Amaya-Bustillos in connection with the incident. He was charged with one count of first-degree arson, two counts of criminal mischief, and 13 counts of aggravated cruelty to animals. In November Amaya-Bustillos pleaded guilty to one count each of second-degree arson and aggravated cruelty to animals, said Krista Flannigan, spokesperson for Adams County District Attorney Don Quick.

On Wednesday, Adams County District Court Judge Patrick Murphy sentenced Amaya-Bustillos to serve 12 years in prison and to pay $149,380 in restitution in connection with the incident, Flannigan said
