Mary Scollay, DVM, equine medical director for the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC), will temporarily serve as chief racing veterinarian in Kentucky with the departure of Dr. Lafe Nichols.

The KHRC made the announcement Sept. 26, but it gave no indication why Nichols had left the position. Prior to taking the job in Kentucky this past summer, Scollay had performed racetrack vet duties at Calder Race Course and Gulfstream Park in Florida.

“In response to a staff vacancy, (Scollay) has agreed to temporarily assume oversight of veterinary racing regulatory operations pending the appointment of an interim chief racing veterinarian,” KHRC executive director Lisa Underwood said in a statement. “We anticipate that we will appoint an interim chief racing veterinarian by mid-October.

“I also anticipate that we will conduct a national search for a permanent chief racing veterinarian. I want to thank Mary for taking on these added responsibilities
