Cruelty investigators in North Texas are hoping that a cash reward will help them find those responsible for maltreating a mare before abandoning her in a rural area.

Whitney Hanson, spokeswoman for the Humane Society of North Texas (HSNT), said authorities were called by a property owner who reported finding a 12-year-old mare stumbling down a rural road in North Texas about three weeks ago. When found, the animal was weak and emaciated, she said. The horse, later named Stella, was subsequently taken to an HSNT facility for rehabilitative care.

“When we got her she could barely stand,” Hanson said. “She had a body condition of between 1 and 1.5 on the Henneke scale, had several severe insect bites on her body, and had sustained injuries where she had fallen.”

Veterinarians are currently treating Stella with intravenous fluids and antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drugs. A sling has been devised to help the horse stand, Hanson said
