Kansas Authorities Probe Horse Killing

A 22-year-old Quarter Horse mare was shot and killed; her 7-month-old foal was unharmed.

Authorities in Kansas are investigating the shooting death of a Quarter Horse mare in Atchison County.

Atchison County Undersheriff Joe Butner said an owner fed his 22-year-old mare and her 7-month-old foal in a pasture on the evening of Oct. 23. When the owner returned the next morning, he discovered the mare dead with a single gunshot to the head, Butner said.

“The mare was shot at close range right above the right eye,” he said. “We think her death was instantaneous.”
