The Louisiana State University (LSU) School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) has received a $60,000 grant from the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Foundation (AHVMF) to support of the LSU SVM’s programs in integrative medicine. This grant is earmarked to support a full-time acupuncture and Chinese medicine practitioner.

The LSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital’s Integrative Medicine Service includes acupuncture and rehabilitation service for small animals, horses, and farm animal species. Expert services are provided by trained and certified individuals encouraging patient healing and improved well-being by augmenting traditional medical and surgical treatments with acupuncture therapy and rehabilitative services. The integrative medicine service works collaboratively with hospital veterinarians to provide the best care possible.

The current service offerings for horses include acupuncture, food therapy, Game-Ready cold therapy, herbal therapy, shock wave therapy, TENS unit treatment (electric neuro-stimulation), therapeutic massage, and therapeutic ultrasound.

"LSU’s School of Veterinary Medicine is developing a strong Integrative Veterinary Medicine Program," said Dr. Margaret Coffey, DVM, MBA, director of the LSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital. "This financial support from the AHVMF is greatly appreciated and is critical to the advancement of this ground-breaking veterinary medicine initiative
