NAHMS: Most Commonly Used Equine Vaccine Type in U.S. is West Nile Virus

Equine operation managers surveyed for the National Animal Health Monitoring System’s (NAHMS) Equine 2005 study report that West Nile virus (WNV) vaccines are the most common vaccine administered to horses at their facilities.


More than 85% of operation managers reported giving vaccines against WNV.


Of the farms that did not vaccinate against WNV, 53.1% of managers said the reason was that their animals were at a low risk of exposure. “Effort and cost of vaccination outweighed financial and other benefits of vaccination” was the reason selected by 13.3% of these managers, while 11% selected, “thought it was important but did not get around to it.”


Other commonly administered vaccines were tetanus (81.3%), Eastern and Western equine encephalitis (75.6%), and influenza (72.5%). Approximately 45% of operation managers reported vaccinating horses against rabies, and 36% vaccinated their horses against strangles
