South Carolina authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding a horse that was shot, tied to a tree, and abandoned.

Captain Bob Bromage, spokesman for the Beaufort County, South Carolina, Sheriff’s Office, said a gray mare, about 12 to 13 years old, was discovered lying on her side and tethered to a tree in Seabrook on Sept. 15. The animal had sustained a single gunshot wound to the head.

“Also, the horse appeared to be in poor condition,” he said.

Further investigation revealed that the mare had been shot elsewhere and transported to the location where she was found
