State law enforcement authorities are seeking whoever is responsible for cutting off part of a horse’s tongue at a farm in Massena, N.Y.

Owner Teri Chapin said she discovered the injured Paint mare April 17 when she entered the horse’s stall to feed it.

"I noticed she hadn’t touched her feed or her hay, and then I noticed about four inches of her tongue had been partially cut and was hanging out the side of her mouth." Chapin said.

A veterinarian was called to treat the animal but was unable to reattach the cut portion to the horse’s tongue, Chapin said. The attending veterinarian also searched the stall and could not identify anything that could have caused the injury, she said
