The University of Wisconsin (UW) School of Veterinary Medicine will host their 24th Annual Seminar for the Serious Horse Owner on Feb. 22. This year’s topic is equine nutrition.

"Nothing is more important in maintaining the health and productivity of a horse than proper nutrition," the program brochure reads. "Horses are unique with regards to their nutritional requirements, because the demands placed on them are so varied. Age, reproductive status, and their type of athletic performance all play a part in making feeding decisions."

Scheduled presentation topics and speakers include:

  • Body weight and body condition scoring—J. Liv Sandberg, equine Extension specialist at UW Madison
  • Matching hay to your horse’s needs and problems associated with feeding—Craig Sandmire, equine nutrition specialist at Doctors Choice Supplements in Prairie du Sac, Wisc.
  • Recognizing the normal plants in hay and pasture—Mark Renz, PhD, assistant professor and Extension weed specialist at UW Madison
  • Laws about horse neglect and removing horses from unhealthy living environments—Tricia L. Meinholz, founder of Walk on Stride on Animal Rescue and UW campus community officer
  • Feeding the horse that has been neglected or starved—Sarah I. Jacob, DVM, a comparative medicine and integrative biology PhD student at Michigan State University
  • Feeding the Cushingoid horse—Sarah I. Jacob, DVM

Also during the event, the school’s American Association of Equine Practitioners Student Chapter (or the "Equine Club") will hold a silent auction, which the club’s largest fund raiser of the year. With the funds that are raised, the club will provide small scholarships for students to attend meetings and educational activities, and proceeds from the auction also help pay for speakers and labs to provide more opportunities for students interested in equine medicine
