Two Texas men have been indicted for allegedly mutilating a mare before abandoning her in San Patricio County.

In August, San Patricio County personnel discovered a 4- or 5-year-old Paint mare with multiple injuries. Michelle Hird, operator of the Rockport Horse Rescue, in Rockport, Texas, said someone had cut out the mare's genitalia and stabbed her inside the initial wound. She also said the horse was allegedly malnourished.

The mare underwent rehabilitative care at the rescue and at the Elgin Equine Hospital, in Elgin, Texas. On Oct. 11, the mare was euthanized at the hospital due to her injuries, Hird said.

On Nov. 13, a grand jury indicted two men in connection with the case, Hird said
