A New York City horse-drawn cab driver accused of animal cruelty has lost his license to drive a carriage in that city.

In December, a New York City Police Department representative said a passerby noticed that a horse pulling a carriage appeared injured; the horse was later found to have an injury to a hind leg. The horse's driver, Saverio Colarusso, was subsequently arrested and charged with one count of misdemeanor animal cruelty, the representative said. That case remains pending.

Abigail Lootens, spokeswomen for the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA), said Colarusso lost his license to drive a horse-drawn carriage in New York City on April 11.

“(The) DCA’s tribunal issued a decision that revoked the license of horse carriage driver licensee Saverio Colarusso and issued him a $3,000 fine for failing to comply with an existing settlement agreement after carrying more than the legally allowed four passengers, and for failing to humanely care of a horse under his supervision,” she said
